ANZCO Foods CEO Update - July 2026

Posted on Thursday, 16 July 2026 under Latest Edition, CEO Updates,

This is traditionally a quieter time of year in the sector. However, as I write this, I’m very conscious that for many of you affected by last week’s extreme wet weather, it will be anything but quiet as you deal with the impacts and the recovery.

In this update, we’ve included information from the Rural Support Trust and Farmstrong. If you or someone you know could use some support, please make use of the services and resources available.

In April, I talked about the strength of our rural communities and the way people step up to support others. I know many of you who have been less affected will already be lending a hand where you can. That practical support and connection will be important as affected communities work through what is likely to be a long recovery.

In more positive news, congratulations to the regional winners and finalists in both the ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice of the Year and the Pact Packaging Young Butcher of the Year competitions. To reach the national finals is a significant achievement and reflects the skill, dedication and professionalism these apprentices and young butchers have already demonstrated in their careers. We're proud to support initiatives that play an important role in developing and recognising the next generation of talent within New Zealand's retail meat industry.

To all 13 finalists, we wish you every success as you prepare for the Grand Final in Auckland on Thursday 13 August. If you're interested in seeing the finalists compete and celebrating the industry's best emerging talent, tickets for the Grand Final and Awards Dinner are available through Retail Meat New Zealand.

Another significant development for our sector this week has been the United States' decision to direct the International Trade Commission (ITC) to undertake a global safeguard investigation into lamb imports. While this had been anticipated for some time, it is nevertheless disappointing. The investigation is not targeted specifically at New Zealand, and our lamb exports to the US have remained stable over time, accounting for approximately a quarter of total US imports. New Zealand lamb exports to the US have not caused, and do not pose, any threat to the US sheep industry and the Meat Industry Association and Beef + Lamb New Zealand are working closely together to ensure New Zealand's position is clearly understood throughout the independent investigation.

As winter continues, our focus at ANZCO remains unchanged. We will continue working alongside our farming partners, supporting our people and delivering value throughout the supply chain. Thank you, as always, for your continued support and the trust you place in ANZCO.
