We’ve combined stories from throughout the business, featuring wins and success stories in the sustainability space.
Intensity targets
In 2025 we established intensity targets – goals that helps us reduce our impact on the environment – for water, fuel sources, and biodiversity.
We achieved our targets in coal, diesel, biodiversity, and LPG gas, leading to a total savings of 4,129t of C02 avoided, and we’re working towards achieving our targets in water, electricity, and natural gas.
Impact assessments
In 2025, we introduced a new way to assess the impact each of our sites has on the environment, measuring 10 areas on a scale of 1–5: water, wastewater, waste, energy, consents, carbon footprint, CC&S engagement, iwi and community, biodiversity, and nature.
The assessment also highlighted a number of positive initiatives already underway across our sites, including:
- An organisation-wide focus on water efficiency, including Canterbury reducing its water use by 24% in the lamb area and 10% in beef
- Native plantings at Five Star Beef, Marlborough and Rangitikei
- A roof rainwater and refrigeration defrost water recycling system at Marlborough, capturing rain and water generated during daily refrigeration cycles
- Kokiri significantly reducing the amount of water it uses per head, and replaced its PVC aprons with TPU aprons which last four times longer and saved up to 20% of waste annually
- Green Island and Waitara’s cardboard recycling initiatives
- Green Island’s new tallow recycling tank
- Canterbury’s hot water generation helps us save 800 MT of coal
- Five Star Beef is running a composting trial for manure and bedding – if successful this will become part of the ongoing site operation
We’ve also had a 17% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions since 2020 - emissions we produce, and emissions we use but aren’t produced by our company like from contracted stock trucks.

ANZCO’s savings
Last year ANZCO’s sites saved:
- 286,851 m3 of water, which is equivalent to 114 Olympic swimming pools
- 802,752 kWh of electricity, which is the same as powering 110 average New Zealand homes for a year
- 3951 GJ of natural gas
- 55,370.47 litres of LPG, avoiding 1,013.67 tCO2 emissions
1,312 tonnes of coal, saving $984,000
In total, we saved 2,293,037.8 kwh of electricity, which is enough to power 316 New Zealand homes for a year.
Weekly challenge

This week’s question was: True or false – you can put all items with the recycling symbol into the recycling bin.
The answer is false. Only plastics labelled 1, 2, and 5 can go in your recycling – you can find out what number the plastic is by looking for arrows making up a triangle, usually on the bottom of the packaging. 1, 2, and 5 are easy to melt down and make into other products, whereas the other plastic types aren’t.
