Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2026
Posted on Monday, 14 September 2026 under Culture and Belonging,
This week, 14-20 September, is Māori language week.
The week is recognised each year to celebrate the Māori culture and language, and with around 185,000 New Zealanders speaking Māori, it’s a great opportunity for people to learn new words and phrases.
Each day of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 2026 has a theme to guide the week - check back in each day to see that day's theme, and any activities or resources that might be helpful for that day.
Plus there are some card games at your site you can use to learn a few kupu in reo Māori this week.
Thursday's theme
Thursday's theme is Te Reo i te Hapori - using te reo in communities and shared spaces – libraries, hobby groups, volunteer organisations, community gardens, youth groups, and neighbourhood gatherings.
Phrases you can use in the community.
