Mental Health Awareness Week 2026

Posted on Monday, 12 October 2026 under Culture and Belonging,

This year New Zealand's Mental Health Awareness Week theme is Belonging Matters - when we create opportunities for people to belong, our communities and wellbeing grow stronger.

Belonging is about feeling connected to the people and communities around us. It’s an important part of our wellbeing and plays a key role in maintaining good mental health.

Research shows that having a strong sense of belonging is closely linked to better mental health outcomes.

Here are some simple things you can do to create everyday moments of connection this week:

  • Take time to have a kōrero with a neighbour

  • Check in and see how a friend is doing

  • Offer to lend a workmate a hand

  • Volunteer for a local charity

  • Help organise an event in your community
