October is breast cancer awareness month

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Kiwi women - about 3,700 Kiwis are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
92% of breast cancers are survivable when found early. Knowing the normal look and feel of your breasts can help you spot a change quickly. Regularly check your breasts to know what's normal for you - and if you notice a change, get it checked by a doctor!
Know your B.R.A.S:
- Be breast aware: from age 20, know your normal, and understand your family history. If your mum or close relative had breast or ovarian cancer, talk to your doctor.
- Reduce your risk: make healthy lifestyle choices, have alcohol-free days, exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy body weight.
- Act promptly: show your doctor any unusual changes straight away.
- Screening mammograms: the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ recommends regular screening mammograms from age 40 to find cancer early, even before a lump can be felt. Mammograms are free from age 45.
If you are affected by breast cancer, or support someone with breast cancer, you can join Mybc, an online community that supports, shares knowledge, and helps you build connections with others who understand your situation.
Men get breast cancer too. 25 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in New Zealand. While rare, it's important to show your doctor any changes that you notice.
