Muslims worldwide are observing Ramadan, which runs from the sighting of the crescent moon until the next. This year, it runs from Friday 28 February until Sunday 30 March.
Ramadan is a celebration of the prophet Muhammad’s first revelation. During this time, Muslims practice being mindful of their faith, which includes fasting from sunrise to sunset, prayer, and charity. The holiday has deep religious and cultural significance throughout the Muslim world.
Muslims wish each other a happy Ramadan during the month. Two of the most common greetings you might use include:
-
“Ramadan Mubarak,” which roughly translates to “Happy Ramadan”
-
“Ramadan Kareem,” which roughly translates to “Have a generous Ramadan”
