Meet Liz Tare

Boning Room Packer at Canterbury

Elizabeth - known as Liz - is a packer in the lamb plant at ANZCO Foods Canterbury, and she's also a diversity and inclusion (D&I) ambassador and first aider. She rotates around a lot of different tasks in the lamb packing room, and is also happy to help out wherever she's needed.

As part of her D&I ambassador role, she'll visit all areas of the lamb plant, and chats to people about how they're going. When she started as ambassador she found there were a few things to work through, and it was intimidating for people to speak up, but now she's worked through those issues and built relationships, people are happy to check in and have a chat. She works closely with the other Canterbury D&I ambassadors, Saimone and Pieter, and meets with D&I ambassadors from around the business each quarter to share ideas and initiatives.

In her role as a first aider, she's often the first person to attend to any injuries in her department. She works with the nurse, Andrea, to refer people to physio appointments or help with injuries that are above Liz's knowledge. She's learned that when people are happy and healthy they'll come to work, but if they're not happy and uncomfortable they don't come in - and without people, the job doesn't get done.

Liz worked in the Cook Islands as a resort duty manager and activity coordinator before she came to ANZCO. She'd start at 6am to take people out on canoes and kayaks during the day, and then she'd start her duty manager shift which often went until midnight! She met Chris Hindson when he came to the islands to recruit employees, and she decided to make the move to New Zealand. Her parents, husband, and children moved over too so she doesn't miss home too much but definitely enjoys going back for holidays.

Outside of work, Liz likes to paint, and she's part of a women's fellowship group that often does crafts like crochet. She's also kept busy with her volunteering. Her church recently bought a building, and Liz is involved in fundraising to help restore it, and buy a piano and other items for the church. After a busy day at work, she might head to the beach, or stay home, finish her house work, and have a glass of wine.

Liz is married and has five children - three of whom work at ANZCO. When they left school, she gave them the option to study or work, and they chose to work at Canterbury. Liz also mentioned that one of her younger children had leukaemia a few years ago, and while it was quite full-on, she's grateful to her team and ANZCO for helping her take the time she needs to support her daughter - and her daughter is now cancer free. Now Liz wants to give back to ANZCO by getting involved as a D&I ambassador, and helping connect people in her community with jobs here.
