How to Spot the Deepfake: Don’t Be Fooled

Posted on Wednesday, 22 October 2025

Deepfakes are AI generated images, videos, or audio and they are becoming increasingly realistic. Knowing how to spot deepfakes can protect you from falling victim.

Deepfakes are created using generative AI tools to produce content that looks and sounds real. The AI tool analyses videos or photos of a person’s face, mannerisms, and voice.

The AI tool then uses that data from the face and voice to generate convincing imitations. As AI technology rapidly improves, these deepfakes are becoming increasingly difficult to spot with the naked eye.

But even the best deepfakes have subtle signs:
  • Flickering or oddly shaped ears
  • “Dead”, emotionless eyes
  • Stiff or unnatural facial expressions
  • Poor lip-syncing in videos
  • Odd shadows or lighting inconsistencies
  • Unnatural pauses, tone, or rhythm in speech
AI is sometimes not very good at generating hands, ears and teeth; always look at the hands for inconsistencies . Note: AI deepfakes are getting more convincing every day, don’t rely on eleven-finger hands alone to spot a deepfake!

By paying attention to these small details, you can spot something that doesn’t feel quite right. Before reacting, sharing, or trusting what you see or hear, take a moment to verify. Check sources, confirm identities, and trust your instincts, because your caution is your first line of defence.
