'How Cybercriminals Use AI Against You'
Posted on Tuesday, 21 October 2025
As much as AI makes life easier, AI can also give cybercriminals new tricks. Attackers can use AI to:
- Write convincing phishing emails
- Create deepfake voices or videos to impersonate people
- Create fake websites or login pages that look real
- Personalise scams to trick you based on your online activity
Phishing emails are nothing new, but AI can make them more convincing than ever. AI can:
- Write emails with perfect grammar, spelling and tone, even if English is not the hacker’s first language
- Tailor messages based on the victim’s online activity, hobbies, or work contacts
- Mimic someone the victim knows, using their language and tone, making it harder to spot a scam
AI can create:
- Fake profiles on social media or dating apps, complete with realistic photos and backgrounds
- Deepfake voices or videos that impersonate someone victim knows and trusts, like a family member or friend
Just because it sounds or looks real doesn’t mean it is. Before clicking links, sending sensitive info, or accepting friend requests, pause and double-check. Confirm information with the person directly, look for red flags, and trust your instincts.
