Today, meet Jope Rokoduguni
Production worker at ANZCO Foods Rakaia
Jope was staying with his Uncle Peni and Aunty Dawn - who are always involved in community work - and he decided to get involved too. He wanted help his uncle and aunty out when they were busy, but he was also keen to make a difference in his local community.
Now, Jope volunteers by cleaning the Rakaia public toilets every morning and night. He finds it rewarding to know that people have a clean space to use because of him. His motivation comes from knowing he's making a difference, and that feeling helps him keep moving forward and continuing to help. His biggest takeaway from his time as a volunteer is that whatever he does, he tries to do it to the best of his ability. Whether he's paid or not, he keeps smiling and working hard because what goes around comes around!
One of his highlights from his volunteering was one particular night when he was cleaning and playing music. A truck driver drove up to use the toilets and as soon as the driver got out of the truck he started dancing along to the music with Jope. The driver complimented Jope on how clean the toilets were and said that he just wanted to stay in the toilets instead of continuing his drive!
His volunteering has helped him enjoys his tasks at work more, no matter how big or small, and he's learned how to create an environment full of energy and passion for the work he and his colleagues do.
His advice for someone wanting to make a positive impact on their community is to go for it - don't hesitate! Ask community groups, friends, and family if they need any help. And, just keep smiling and showing love to those around you.
