What's the Plan, Stan? | July and August health and safety focus

Posted on Monday, 6 July 2026 under Health & Safety,

July’s health and safety focus is about knowing what to do if an emergency happens.

In an emergency, you may end up being stuck at home for three or more days, or need to evacuate quickly.

Figure out what supplies you might need – you probably have most of the things you’d need already – and make a plan so everyone in your house knows what to do.

Here’s what to include in your emergency kit:

  • Water for three or more days – about nine litres per person
Long lasting food that doesn’t need cooking, and food for your babies and animals
  • Toilet paper and large plastic buckets for an emergency toilet
  • Heavy-duty gloves and an N95 or P2 mask
  • Any essential medication or equipment
  • Cash, especially coins and small notes
  • Portable phone charger
  • Copies of important documents including photo ID
  • Batteries, torches, candles, and matches

Here’s what to include in your grab bag:

  • Walking shoes, warm clothes, and a raincoat
  • Water and snack food
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Cash, especially coins and small notes
  • Copies of important documents including photo ID

Check expiry dates and test items in your survival kit and grab bags frequently.

Having a physical copy of your emergency plan is a good idea in case you lose power or internet, so keep it somewhere safe and easy to find. You can find emergency plan templates on the Get Ready NZ website.

By looking after yourself and your household, you'll also be helping emergency services focus on the people who need the most help.

Tell us your top tip for preparing for an emergency, and go in the draw to WIN an AA Grab & Go four-person emergency kit worth $199. Just email your advice to comp@anzcofoods.com- entries close Friday 31 July 2026.
