World Chocolate Day is celebrated annually on 7 July, which some think anniversary of the introduction of chocolate to Europe in 1550.

The history of chocolate can be traced back to the ancient Mayans, and possibly even further to the Olmecs of southern Mexico.

Chocolate comes from from the fruit of cacao trees native to Central and South America.

These fruits, known as pods, contain around 40 cacao beans each. These beans are dried and roasted to produce cocoa nibs. The nibs are ground into a liquid which is blended with sugar, then ‘conched’ for smoothness and ‘tempered’ to give chocolate bars their glossy appearance.

The first World Chocolate Day was celebrated in 2009.
