Meet John Moses

Knife Trainer Technician at Canterbury

John has been part of the ANZCO Foods Canterbury team for 24 years and has worked his way through a wide range of roles. He started in the Room 3 training room before moving into Room 1 as a floor boy. From there, he progressed to labourer, knife hand, leading hand and step-up leading hand, where he covered supervisors and managed cut changes and production orders. Today, he puts all that experience to good use as a Knife Trainer Technician.

In his current role, John teaches employees how to sharpen and maintain their knives correctly, helping them work safely while reducing aches and strains. He enjoys being able to pass on his knowledge and help others develop their skills. He says things have come a long way since he first started, when new employees were simply handed a knife and a steel and expected to get on with the job. Things are much safer now with technique training and knowledge how to keep knives sharp.

Before joining ANZCO Foods, John worked in a butcher's shop in Ashburton for a couple of years after leaving school. With a couple of mates already working at the Canterbury site, he decided to apply too, and has never looked back.

One of the things John values most about working at ANZCO is the opportunity to grow. Throughout his career, he has been able to take on new challenges and progress through a variety of roles, something he says has kept his work interesting and surprises him how much opportunity there is if you want it.

Outside of work, John enjoys staying active. You'll often find him at the gym, on the golf course, playing Friday night softball, or taking part in ANZCO's twilight netball team. He also coaches his eight-year-old nephew's football team, which includes a couple of children from ANZCO Foods Canterbury families, and volunteers through his church.

John also enjoys spending time socialising with friends and admits he occasionally likes to push the boat out.

John has been with his wife for 16 years, and they have been married for the past two. She works at a local retirement home, where John also volunteers from time to time. The couple are currently looking at getting a dog to complete the family.
