Meet Jason Young

Production Worker at Green Island

Jason Young has worked in the packing room at ANZCO Foods Green Island for the past three years. As a packer, Jason's role includes rotating between different stations, packing patties for retail and foodservice, and making cartons.

Before moving into his current role, Jason worked on the night cleaning crew at Green Island. Once production finished for the day, the team stripped down machinery and thoroughly cleaned equipment so it met the high standards required for food production. He says it could be challenging work, particularly as the grill room got quite hot during summer, and he was also working when most people were asleep. He found he wasn't seeing his family as much as he'd like, so he moved into his current role in the packing room.

Before joining ANZCO, Jason worked for Downer in traffic management, often working 14-hour days outdoors in all weather conditions.

One thing that surprised Jason about working at ANZCO was seeing everything that goes into making Angel Bay patties. He knew the site produced food, but he didn't realise how many ingredients and how much specialised machinery went into making the final product.

Outside work, Jason enjoys motorbikes, often attending bike rallies and maintaining his own bike. Rather than taking it straight to a mechanic, he prefers teaching himself how to fix things, and he hasn't had any issues so far. He and his family live on a lifestyle block with horses, sheep, chickens, a cat, and a six-year-old golden retriever that goes almost everywhere with him. After a busy day, Jason picks up his kids from school before unwinding with a workout in his home gym.

Jason also has an interesting family connection to New Zealand history. His great-great-grandfather emigrated from England and founded the South Canterbury township of Winchester, where he built the town's first pub and villa. Both buildings are still standing today.
