Meet Barry Moore
Coldstore Supervisor at Waitara
Barry Moore is one of the the longest-serving staff members at ANZCO Foods Waitara and has been there for 23 years. He worked at the site when it was Riverlands and processed meat and had a shop on site, and was there while it was fitted out for the jerky and patty processing lines. He also remembers when they had to share about half of the site with Tegel.
He’s a Coldstore supervisor, where he looks after inward and outward-bound goods and the sort room. He says the biggest part of his role is looking after people – having been at the site for so long, he finds people come to him if they need a hand with anything.
Before becoming a supervisor, however, Barry wore many hats. He’s been a storeman, a forklift driver, and a loadout clerk – basically most things in the coldstore. His team was small, so he needed to be versatile in case people were away.
He’s noticed things have definitely changed since he started at ANZCO. He recalls having a red shift and a blue shift, who took turns working four days on, four days off – now the teams work Monday to Friday. There were nine people in his team back then, and now there are more than 40. There’s also a bit more computer work than when he first started out.
He’s been pleasantly surprised at how good his bosses have been. He loves coming to work because he feels well looked after and everyone is accountable. In turn, he’s able to look after his bosses and his team too.
Barry has five children and a lot of grandchildren. He has one set of twin grandchildren, and another set of twins on the way. Only three of his grandchildren don’t live in New Zealand, and one of his goals is to do a bit more travelling to see them all. He’s nearly at retirement age, but he doesn’t plan on fully retiring – he likes to keep himself busy.
Outside work, he loves getting out for a round of golf. He’s recently bought a golf cart so he doesn’t get tired walking between holes – an added bonus is the grandkids love riding in the cart too. He also enjoys rugby, and his claim to fame is representing Otago in rugby in the 80s.
After a busy day, he’ll head home and do the housework – there’s always something to do. He likes to keep busy and active to stay as fit as possible. One of his favourite phrases is, “You don’t know how many good summers you have left”, which reminds him to get out there and make the most of every day.
