Air Rescue Trust update

Posted on Monday, 15 June 2026

From March to May, the Canterbury and West Coast Westpac Rescue Helicopters completed 283 missions – 102 on the West Coast and 181 in Canterbury. Of those missions, 19% involved winch operations and 15% involved the use of night vision goggles.

A new H145 cockpit and winch simulator is now in operation at the Air Rescue Base. It’s one of only five joint cockpit and winch simulators in the world, and the only one to replicate the exact winch configuration and distinctive geographical terrain that local crews operate in. You can see the simulator in action on Seven Sharp here.

Finally, the rescue chopper’s annual Back to Base fundraiser is happening again this August. We’ve previously had ANZCO people take part and it’d be great to see more people get involved this year. Get more information and sign up here.
