Our Sustainability

It’s More than Business

The way that we manage our environment affects our long term economic viability, our image and our reputation as a trustworthy business leader.  As guardians of the environment for future generations, we all have a stake in protecting it, and promoting best practices which will ensure that our grandchildren and their children have a healthy and prosperous future.

ANZCO’s commitment to the wise stewardship of the environment:

  • starts on the properties where our farmer producers grow and nurture their livestock
  • includes the suppliers of processing materials, via our approved supplier programme
  • incorporates the best practice of contractors who deliver the livestock to our processing facilities
  • continues at the accredited processing facilities where the livestock is converted into food and healthcare solutions, and other by-products
  • extends to the sustainable transportation and packaging of products to our customers and end-users, and
  • resides with us as we seek to be vigilant in our efforts to find creative and progressive solutions that mitigate and minimise any adverse environmental impact.

It Starts in Our Backyard

It’s hard to demand more from your partners, suppliers and competitors than you demand from yourself.  That’s why we are committed to ensuring we make the least adverse impact possible on our environment, be it in our corporate office or in our processing facilities.

Steps We’re Taking

  • We commission energy audits to identify areas where we can reduce energy use.
  • We are adopting renewable technologies and eco-friendly design to reduce energy use in our processing plants and in our offices.
  • We’re taking steps to reduce hot water use and improve water efficiency in our processing plants.
  • Where possible we use local/regional suppliers.
  • We endeavour to cut down air travel and reduce our carbon footprint by scheduling video-conferencing where possible.
  • Waste handling using environmentally compatible technologies and systems.
  • We regularly tune our combustion plants to ensure air discharges are within agreed limits.
  • We focus on reducing waste of any resource.
  • We have participated in a New Zealand industry study to determine the carbon footprint of lamb and beef production from New Zealand.
  • We are supporting our shipping company, Maersk, in their efforts to reduce sulphur emmissions worldwide with their fuel switch initiative. See www.maerskline.com for more information
  • We are preparing for our involvement in the New Zealand Emission's Trading Scheme (ETS) with voluntary reporting beginning in 2011.
